You’ll see a lot of virtual assistant “academies” online. Very few of them are DTI-licensed. Here’s the practical difference — and why it should matter to you before you enrol anywhere.
Accountability, not just marketing
A DTI-licensed training centre is a registered business with the Philippine government. That means the entity you paid actually exists, has a physical address, and is answerable to a regulator if something goes wrong. Unlicensed operators can — and regularly do — vanish overnight.
Certificates that mean something
Your certificate is a claim about what you completed. When it comes from a registered institution, overseas clients (especially Australian, UK, and US employers) can verify that the training happened at a real place. From an unlicensed Facebook-group “course,” they can’t.
Consumer protection
DTI-registration puts your enrolment under Philippine consumer protection law. If a course is misrepresented or a promised mentor never materialises, you have a real path to complaint and refund. Without licensing, you have a screenshot and a prayer.
A signal to the industry
Long-term VA employers in tech, professional services, and creative industries increasingly filter for candidates trained by legitimate institutions. Being able to say “I trained at a DTI-licensed academy” is a genuine differentiator in a saturated market.
